Weekly Quotes (Spring)

Robin Williams
"Awake, thou wintry earth -
Fling off thy sadness!
Fair vernal flowers, laugh forth
Your ancient gladness!"
~Thomas Blackburn
Weekly Riddle
When John was six years old he hammered a nail into his favorite tree to mark his height. Ten years later at age sixteen, John returned to see how much higher the nail was. If the tree grew by five centimeters each year, how much higher would the nail be?
Welcome back to school! I hope everybody had a fun and restful break together with your families. Spring has sprung....Baseball has begun, nature is blossoming and 4th graders are springing around as well.
Here is an update about all the exciting things taking place in Room 12:
* In Science we are kicking off a new unit of study in Energy for Life and Growth. I am also teaching our class about the different parts of our upcoming Science Projects:
Topic, investigative question, hypothesis, background research, experiment steps and materials, results, conclusion and abstract. Students may begin looking for exciting project ideas. I will be sending home the Science Project details next Monday. Finally, we will be learning about Microsoft Excel so we can put a graph onto our project display poster.
*This week we are in the middle of our Heroes unit in reading. We are reading about Lou Gehrig and will be watching his speech that I downloaded from Youtube. Students are learning the importance of sportsmanship and how Lou Gehrig exemplified this virtue. I will also show the class the famous "Who is on First Routine" with Abbot and Costello. We will be writing a 5-paragraph essay about our Hero followed by a poem and powerpoint project while using Garage Band.
*I am in the process of testing students on their reading fluency. So far there have been great strides made! Let me know if you would like to see your child's progress in this subject.
*Students are in the middle of their Gold Rush Projects right now and we will research them one more time this Friday using the Internet. I will be teaching the class how to do a power point project on the computer and each of them will create their own in class after the project is finished on April 21st.
That's it for now!
