WEEK 24
WEEKLY QUOTE
A slender acquaintance with the world must convince every man that actions, not words, are the true criterion of the attachment of friends.
WEEKLY RIDDLE
Not born, but from a Mother's body drawn, I hang until half of me is gone. I sleep in a cave until I grow old, then valued for my hardened gold. What am I?
Class Update
A special thanks goes out to Ursula, Rachel's mom, for sharing her love of art with our class. She taught a Valentine's Art Lesson using recycled materials. It's so wonderful to have parents come in and share their gifts and talents with our class. So...if there are more parents that are interested in coming to class to share, or teach a lesson, please e-mail me!
This week our class will continue to learn about the Americans' move westward. Room 12 students are writing some hilarious Gold Journal Stories about their journey to the west as gold seekers. In reading we are going through Chapters 4-7 in By the Great Horn Spoon. We will have a reading comprehension quiz on these chapters this Friday. In our new math we are continuing our study of graphing functions using the book and the homework workbook. Please be take note of the pros and cons of this new curriculum. Lisa Bruce will be organizing an opportunity for parent and student feedback in a survey. This will help inform our decision for the new textbook adoption.
This Friday we will HOPEFULLY going to the UCSC Life Lab. Please have your child dress warm and be prepared for the rain because this is an outdoor field trip. I will be contacting parent drivers this Tuesday and Wednesday to remind them.
Finally, please take the time to write to letters to our legislators about the proposed budget cuts and its impact on education and our children. We need to fight back and have our voices heard! Teachers will use part of our upcoming staff meeting to do this as well. One of the many proposed programs on the chopping block is the class size reduction funding. A friend of mine who is an administrator, Kyle Griffith, said he spoke with the gentleman who is in charge of the finances for all of Santa Cruz County for the last 35 years. He said this is the worse and most drastic cuts he has seen to date. We need to write to our district leadership AND the state to advocate for what really matters.
However, the learning moves forward and teachers will continue to make the most regardless of the changes and cutbacks that may come.
See you at school,
Mr. Sweet
