Week 10
Last week I enjoyed our time together discussing your child's progress in school. I appreciated all of the feedback you gave me.
Class News
- This week in Social Studies we will continue our study of the great explorers through history in both 4th and 5th grades. We will be doing a fun project in class where students will choose an explorer and make a "Trading Card" similar to a baseball card.
- 5th grade students will be doing newsgroup stories every other Monday. Each Monday and Wednesday our class receives newspapers that are generously donated by the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Students choose their stories from the paper or the Internet in class. Students are graded based on the rubric I sent home with them.
- Our class book report will be due in a week on Monday, October 23rd.
- 4th grade students will be doing a World War II four-part project culminating our unit study of this period in history. I sent the directions home with the students on Friday. This project is due Friday, November 17th. Students will choose a topic to study. For instance, Franklin Roosevelt, The Battle of the Bulge, World War II Weaponry, Women of World, etc.
The four components will consist of:
1. Creative project from the Product Choice Chart in your child's packet. (Parents are welcome to come to class to view some projects that I have kept from previous years).
2. One-Three page report with a title page and bibliography siting the research used.
3. A speech to present to the class. (The grading rubric is attached to the packet).
4. Finally, a student created illustration in color of their topic.
We will be doing much of the work in class... We will be gathering research from the Internet this Friday. In addition, we will begin the written report rough draft together and start writing our speech outlines after our research is complete.
An exciting project is coming soon for the 5th Graders too! An American History Hero Project. Stay tuned for the details.
